ÖIAT Research

The Austrian Institute for Applied Telecommunications (ÖIAT) has been promoting the competent, safe and responsible use of digital media for more than 20 years. Together with our partners, we conduct research on current topics related to the digital world. On this page we provide an overview of past and current research projects.

Children & Young People Gender & Diversity Social Media

Web 2.0 applications are a natural part of everyday media life - especially for children and young people. It is easy to publish one's own contributions and it is easy to organise one's own presence on the web. Therefore, a competent approach to privacy protection is crucial, as published data often cannot be removed in practice. Little research has been done on the specific practices that young men and women use to present themselves in digital media. Although the social web, with its opportunities for self-expression and self-presentation, plays an important role in young people's identity formation, the gender dimension is hardly addressed in existing educational initiatives and programmes.

The aim of imaGE 2.0 is to raise awareness of gender and young people's image management in digital media by bringing a gender dimension to the discussions on safer internet, privacy and self-presentation in digital media.

To this end, the gender competence of educational organisations will be developed and deepened. As a basis for this, the practices of self-presentation and image management of male and female young people in digital media, the gender-specific demands of young people on digital media and the (possible) gender-specific causes will be analysed.

On this basis, gender-reflective didactic tools will be developed to support teachers and trainers in schools. The aim is to enable young people to manage their online image in a safe, conscious and self-determined way, to reduce fears and to make self-presentation in digital media fun.

imaGe 2.0 was funded by the FEMtech programme of the Federal Ministry for Climate Protection, Environment, Energy, Mobility, Innovation and Technology.
