ÖIAT Research

The Austrian Institute for Applied Telecommunications (ÖIAT) has been promoting the competent, safe and responsible use of digital media for more than 20 years. Together with our partners, we conduct research on current topics related to the digital world. On this page we provide an overview of past and current research projects.

Digital Literacy Gender & Diversity Seniors

The project mobi.senior.A conducts an empirical survey on the internet usage of senior citizens. It focuses on the following research question: What are the differences between senior citizens in using mobile devices (tablets and smartphones) to access the internet and what are the implications for gender- and diversity-sensitive training, purchasing advice, support and development of apps for mobile devices?

More and more older people are discovering digital media. The population group with the highest growth rate in digital media use is the post-working age group. This group can therefore benefit from the internet and other media and reduce the risk of social exclusion. In particular, the proliferation of mobile devices such as tablets and smartphones can make it easier for older people to access the internet, but also poses new challenges. There are significant gender differences in this target group. Older women in particular face the exclusionary effects of both 'doing gender' and 'doing ageing'.

The aim of the project is to conduct a gender-specific study of internet use with tablets and smartphones in the target group of older people, focusing on requirements, motivations, appropriation strategies, barriers, access, applications for and by older people. The results of the empirical research (see results: research report) form the basis for target-group appropriate educational programmes, practical guides and guidelines.

mobi.senior.A was funded by the FEMtech programme of the Federal Ministry for Climate Protection, Environment, Energy, Mobility, Innovation and Technology.
