ÖIAT Research

The Austrian Institute for Applied Telecommunications (ÖIAT) has been promoting the competent, safe and responsible use of digital media for more than 20 years. Together with our partners, we conduct research on current topics related to the digital world. On this page we provide an overview of past and current research projects.

Artificial Intelligence Children & Young People Disinformation

Chain letters have been around for a long time, but they are increasingly being sent via WhatsApp. Because chain letters are particularly unsettling for younger children, Saferinternet.at has launched the SI-Bot project.

In Saferinternet workshops, especially children of primary school age report that chain letters scare them. This is understandable, because these messages do not only contain harmless content, but also spread fear and panic. In one disturbing WhatsApp audio message, for example, a computer voice claims that the recipients will die if the message is not immediately forwarded to 20 contacts. 'If you don't forward it, you won't be alive tomorrow', the message says.

While adults are likely to recognise this threat as a bad joke, many children and teenagers are unable to see the message for what it is. They are frightened and don't know how to react. That is why we developed the Safer Internet Bot in this project. Using natural language processing (NLP) and neural networks, the chatbot recognises chain letters and can quickly answer children's questions.
