Children & Young People Social Media

The Youth Internet Monitor is a representative study conducted annually on behalf of Saferinternet.at. It analyses how and which social networks and online platforms are used by young people (aged 11 to 17) in Austria and how their media use is changing.

Social media is an important part of young people's lives. For a long time, there was a lack of data on how important the individual platforms actually are and how the role of individual platforms changes over time. Since 2016, Saferinternet.at has therefore been collecting annual data on the use of social media by young people in Austria as part of the Youth Internet Monitor initiative: Which social networks are currently popular among young users in Austria? Which networks are most popular among girls? Which are the favourites of boys?

By identifying which applications are most relevant for minors, the results allow Saferinternet.at to identify risks and to update Safer Internet topics and awareness measures such as trainings, online content and brochures. The results of the Youth Internet Monitor (jugendinternetmonitor.at) are also used to select the most appropriate digital communication channels. The Youth Internet Monitor is also used as a tool to make adults aware of the digital world of children and young people and to promote the services and expertise of the awareness centre.
